Air force, police of our skies. Two air defense interventions

In the early afternoon of today the fighter aircraftF-2000 Eurofighter of the Air Force, in alarm service for the defense of national airspace, carried out a double intervention on the order of immediate take-off (in technical jargon called "scramble") to intercept and control two civil aircraft that had lost radio contact with air traffic agencies.

At 12: 30 about two F-2000 Eurofighter aircraft 4 ° Stormo of Grosseto took off to intercept a DR40 aircraft of French nationality that had taken off from the Curtatone airfield, in the province of Mantua, and was headed for Gap Tallard, in France.

A few minutes after take-off, the two interceptor fighters reached the French plane, which in the meantime had restored radio contact with the air traffic agencies. After having visually ascertained that there were no emergency conditions, the two F-2000s returned to the Grosseto base.

To the 14: 00 two F-2000 Eurofighter del 36 ° Stormo Gioia del Colle took off to intercept a CL60 aircraft of a Canadian operating company that, starting from Madrid, Spain, was crossing the Italian air space to go to Skiatos, in Greece.

Also in this case, the two interceptor fighters quickly reached the civil aircraft to carry out the procedures for visually checking the situation. Having ascertained the restoration of radio contact with the air traffic agencies, the two F-2000s escorted the CL60 aircraft to the border of the national airspace, and then returned to the Gioia del Colle base.

Both operational missions were activated following the "scramble" order received from the CAOC (Combined Air Operation Center) of Torrejon, the NATO body responsible for the surveillance of the skies in the area, and were carried out under the control of the operations rooms of the Air Force surveillance and air defense system.

The Air Force ensures the surveillance of the national airspace 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with a defense system that is integrated, even in peacetime, with that of other NATO countries. The service is guaranteed - for the surveillance, identification and control part - by the 24th Integrated Military Air Defense Group (DAMI) of Poggio Renatico (Fe) and by the 11nd Radar Group of Licola (Na), while the intervention in flight is insured by the 22 ° Stormo di Grosseto, the 4 ° Stormo di Gioia del Colle and the 36 ° Stormo di Trapani Birgi, all equipped with Eurofighter fighter aircraft.
