Indonesia, closed Bali airport for ashes escaped from the Agung volcano

The Indonesian authorities have announced that the Bali airport has been closed since the early hours of this morning due to the eruption of ash from the Agung volcano, the same that last November had caused inconvenience to the airport for weeks.

From the volcano a column of ashes and high smoke 2.5 km has been raised, and, according to the forecasts, the winds could transport such ashes to Java, one of the most densely populated areas of the country. However, the authorities did not raise the level of danger, which still remains "orange".

The last major eruption of the Agung had killed around 1.600 people in the 1963. About a billion tons of debris had been released into the atmosphere up to Jakarta, a thousand kilometers away, causing darkness that had lowered the temperature of the 0,3 degree globe within a year.

Indonesia, which has the largest number of active volcanoes in the world, is located on the "Pacific belt of fire", a zone of collision between tectonic plates, the scene of numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
