Elisabetta Trenta: for the Libyan question "diplomacy" is the only useful solution for Italy

Elisabetta Trenta, Minister of Defense, speaking as a guest on the show "Circo Massimo" spoke about the situation in Libya and the line that Italy should take on this.

According to the minister, in these occasions diplomacy must be brought to the highest levels without exploiting these opportunities to make politics that on the contrary must work together aiming towards the same direction in order to arrive at the best possible solution.

The minister then added: “I would say that those who speak of possible military attacks do not realize what they are saying because today we are experiencing the consequences of a military attack that had not thought about afterwards. Right now it wouldn't be better than a few years ago. The consequences, especially in terms of destabilization, would immediately fall on Italy and then those who say "attacked because otherwise the migrants arrive", "did not understand that if it were to lead to a war, we would not have migrants, we would have refugees, and refugees they welcome each other ". “We need to understand what it means to negotiate - explained Trenta on possible negotiations with General Haftar - if it means speaking Italy must continue to talk to everyone to ensure that a non-military solution can be reached. This is what we have done and what we must continue to do in order to arrive at a solution ”.

Elisabetta Trenta, then referring to France, concluded by saying: “France has made declarations at the international level, that even if it were more involved than it seems it could not possibly take them back without losing face. So I don't think things are exactly how they are being told. It is clear that behind the Libyan crisis there have always been various powers, on both sides, but we have known this for a long time ”.

Meanwhile the bombings of Tripoli continue. At dawn today, five Grad missiles hit a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Tripoli, Abu Salim, on the way to the Libyan capital's airport. The mayor of the neighborhood wrote it on Twitter.

According to a spokesman, the missiles hit several apartments and houses and citizens intervened to extinguish the fires but there were no victims. Fayez al-Serraj's National Union government accuses Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army of firing missiles even at civilian homes, but Haftar's forces defend themselves by claiming that attempts are underway to delegitimize the offensive.
