Libya, al Sarraj raises the stakes and asks Italy for weapons

Immediately after the visit of the Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio Fayez al Sarraj, sent the request for military support to Ankara to contain the offensive launched for the capture of Tripoli by General Khalifa Haftar. The move by al Sarraj, writes La Stampa, does not represent a tear against Italy, with which there was a rapprochement with the visit of the head of the Farnesina. In fact, the request for help was not only formulated against Ankara, explain GNA sources according to which yesterday in Tripoli there was a summit meeting extended to the Presidential Council and the Council of Ministers. During which a request for military aid to the Government recognized by the international community was unanimously approved, formulated in five letters of the same tenor with the same contents. The recipients are the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey and Algeria, the sources confirm, explaining how Sarraj wanted to leave the door open to all the reference partners. Al Sarraj now wants to test the real availability of European countries, with the support of Recep Tayyip Erdogan who has already made available drones, armored vehicles, equipment and trainers. It is also ready at Tripoli's request to send five thousand soldiers to support government forces. For the Libyan leader, therefore, the request for help on the one hand is a way to legitimize the landing of Ankara troops on Libyan territory, and on the other hand to test the real will of the other interlocutors to intervene in defense of national sovereignty and integrity Libyan territory which, as he himself told Di Maio, cannot be questioned, neither by Haftar nor by anyone else.

The Turkish aid, however, had alarmed everyone in Europe starting with Conte who spoke of risk of finding a new Somalia in the backyard in the event of a Turkish intervention in the conflict.

In mid-January there will be the Berlin summit to discuss a possible political solution to the dossier. A little late because al Serraj with this new request could favor the military escalation at the gates of Tripoli, nullifying the political solution desired by the European countries. During the week, sources at the Farnesina say, Italy will send a high representative to Libya who will report directly to foreigners. The question arises spontaneously, but don't we already have an Ambassador over there?
