Libya: Americans in the Mediterranean, special forces ready to help Al Serraj

The United States sends theAbraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. The "Carrier strike group" will be operating in the area of the Sixth US fleet based in Naples, where the United States Naval Forces Europe Command is also located. The aircraft carrier entered European waters "to train, patrol and show strength in regions where the Russian Navy has become more active”, Quotes a statement from the American navy.

The US Navy reports that the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group boasts "ability to respond anywhere and whenever it is required through a series of missions, as well as having flexibility and sustainability to fight important wars and guarantee the freedom of the seas". The entry of US forces follows the rumors aired by the press on alleged return of a team of US special forces to Libya, in the Misrata area, a city-state ally of Tripoli in the conflict against General Khalifa Haftar. Last 7 April, the US command in Africa (Africom) announced the "temporary transfer" of its men from the Libyan theater "for security reasons".

In an interview with the "Corriere della Sera", the US senator Lindsey Graham, regarded as a reference point for President Donald Trump in foreign policy, he admitted that the United States should do more on Libya: "It will be my commitment to press the Trump administration to be more present, more visible. I can already say one thing: the US government is opposed to any military solution imposed by one of the two conflicting parties, simply because it would not be sustainable. The country would remain in chaos. And the consequences would be discharged on the population, but also on the stability of Tunisia and Egypt ".

The situation on the ground

General Khalifa Haftar has resumed his advance around that city of Azizya, one hundred kilometers south of the capital, which is essential to create a logistical hub from which gasoline, ammunition and food can be supplied to the troops engaged on the various sides of the front line. Azizya reportedly fell on Friday night after a prolonged series of attacks that forced groups loyal to Prime Minister Al Serraj to withdraw. But success is not final. The logistics of Haftar's troops, divided between several poorly coordinated groups, is to be built and will take several days to consolidate. Another directive of the advance winds on Suani ben Adem, 25 kilometers south of Tripoli. The general's planes yesterday bombed the area of Ain Zara which had returned under the control of the Tripoli militias after the fighting in recent days. Other raids by the Libyan National Army have targeted the Rahbet Al-Deroua military base in the Tajoura area, east of Tripoli. The 33rd Infantry Regiment led by Bashir Khalafullah al-Maqni is stationed at the base. The forces close to the Libyan government of national concord have meanwhile announced the arrest of several men loyal to General Haftar in the city of Zwara, west of Tripoli.

Problems for humanitarian flows also for Italy

According to what was communicated by the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the capital, at least 15 thousand displaced people fleeing from the neighborhoods of Tripoli. The death toll, including 28 children, reached 100 yesterday. The injured are over five hundred. Among the latter there are at least 200 children.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that Italy is ready to face this emergency too.
