Monacizzo, celebrates the Madonna who caused the Saracens to flee

(by John Blakeye) I am in Salento (part of the lower Taranto area). This is a tiny village called Monacizzo. I walk there every morning when I take my daily walk / jog.

In this village there is a tiny chapel with a statue of the Madonna of Loreto inside. At the time of the Saracens ... there were raids and killings by Muslims so the people took refuge in the countryside if they had time.

One day the Saracens landed. The people saw them coming from one of the many towers that are still on the coast road.

The poor people took the statue of the Madonna and carried it in procession through the village to protect the Saracens.

The Saracens suddenly lost their sight. If they advanced towards the town… they didn't see us… if they went back towards the sea… they saw us.

Faced with that miracle the Saracens fled and the people were saved.

The event is celebrated on August 17th.
