Marina Militare, Legionella alert on the Margottini

Margottini, who left La Spezia on February 20, despite the legionella alert being triggered yesterday, continues the mission. To report the presence of the bacterium on board was the secretary of the party for the protection of the military, Luca Marco Comellini, who published a long post on the net, asking that the ship, currently sailing in the waters of the Red Sea, headed for the Indian Ocean to take part in the European anti-piracy operation Atlanata, return to Italy. At the base of the alarm launched on the network by Comellini, there are some analyzes carried out on the water on board intended for human consumption, carried out several days before the departure of the frigate from La Spezia. Investigations that revealed, as Comellini has reconstructed, the presence of the bacterium and other anomalies. A situation that for the secretary of the party for the protection of the military would be due to deficiencies in maintenance and would put the health of the 160 crew members at risk. And it would not be an isolated case. Even the latest analyzes carried out on board the Rizzo frigate, launched in 2017, would show various anomalies, including the presence of bacteria and chemicals such as triolimethanes (highly polluting and considered carcinogenic) in the water destined for the crew. Faced with what he defines as a strong "disinterest" on the part of military leaders, Comellini is ready to present a complaint to the La Spezia prosecutor's office. "The latter, unlike the top of the Navy and the silent Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, concludes, I hope he will want to order the preventive seizure of the entire Navy fleet in order to protect the health of the more than 30 thousand members of the armed force ". From the Navy, on the other hand, they ensure that it is easy alarmism. The checks on board the Margottini were made regularly before the ship's departure and the situation is under control. No crew member, the press office explained, presented symptoms of legionella, a bacterium that can easily develop in humid environments where there is still water. And precisely to avoid the risk of a possible contagion, analyzes are periodically carried out on board all the ships in the fleet. In case of anomalies or malfunctions of the sea water purification and desalination plants, used by the crews for drinking, washing and cooking, the interventions have always been timely, ensure, and have been carried out with the utmost care to better protect health of the soldiers on board. In any case, they are keen to point out from the Navy, after the rumor on the net, on board the Margottini further checks were carried out to ascertain the presence or absence of legionella and the results will be analyzed and announced in the coming days. In the meantime, the frigate, as scheduled, continues its route to the Indian Ocean.
