Military Navy: ALLIANCE Ship parked in the Norwegian city of TROMSØ

From today 27 July to 31 July Alliance ship, A scientific research unit, will support the Norwegian city of Tromsø, the last stage of the "High North 17" campaign in the Arctic Ocean, south of the Svalbard Islands.

With the High North 17 Campaign, the Navy and the Hydrographic Institute return to the Arctic seas to conduct scientific research after 89 years from the exploits of Commander Nobile.

The High North 2017 campaign aims at studying climate change in the Polar region to contribute to the scientific progress of the international community, concerned with the issues surrounding the Arctic region.

This project brings together the main national research organizations, such as the CNR (National Research Council), the OGS (National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics), the ENEA (National Agency for New Technologies for Energy and Economic Development Sustainable), international researchers at La Spezia's Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (NATO CMRE), under the logistical and scientific coordination of the Marine Hydrographic Institute (IIM).

On Friday 28 July, at 12.00, a press conference will be held on board the unit, during which the preliminary results obtained from the activities carried out in the fields of geophysics, marine geology, seabed characterization and oceanography will be presented physics.

The activity conducted by the Alliance ship therefore represents an important added value in the collection of useful evaluation elements in many sectors, not least the climate one.

The Navy, with the help of platforms and tools for marine research at the Naval Hydrographic Institute, contributes to improving knowledge of the evolutions of that marine environment in order to better secure the security and free use of resources.

On Saturday, 29 on 10.15 July from 12.45 to XNUMX, the population will be able to board and visit Alliance.

The Military Navy through the IOM has been participating for two years at the Arctic Table, providing specialist support to the Arctic Council's Emergency, Prevention, Preparedness and Response Working Group. Particularly relevant to this activity is the role taken by the Navy through the Hydrographic Institute, as the "marine focal point" of the national scientific community in Arctic.

This important role has been achieved thanks to the establishment of the Department of Geophysics and Oceanography at the Hydrographic Institute and the high dynamism demonstrated by it since its foundation.

The Arctic polar area (along with the Antarctic twin) for its "engine" climate characteristics is crucial to understanding the evolution of climate and its impact on the planet and the global economy.

In this framework where environmental, economic, and geo-strategic aspects blend, the reason for Italy's presence in the Arctic area lies.

Nave Alliance is a multi-purpose research unit that mainly carries out activities conducted by the Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), on behalf of the Scientific and Technological Organization (NATO Science and Technology Organization - STO) .

Since March 2016 is registered in the register of the navy and equipped with personnel of the Navy thanks to an agreement of December 2015 between the Navy and the CMRE.
