🎤 In the book "Geopolitics of the Sea" (Mursia) ten interventions to define a maritime strategy in defense of national interests

There is no theme of our present that does not have a maritime declension: from energy to safety, from trade to the environment, from food needs to manufacturing industry. In the volume Geopolitics of the sea, published by Mursia (pages 216, euro 25,00) In bookstores from 10 in May, the major experts on maritime themes, in ten speeches, trace the route on topics that closely affect everyone, and not just those who live and work on the sea.

In Italy are 190 thousand maritime companies that represent about 3% of GDP, 800 thousand employed in the sector. These data would be enough to signal the importance of the Blue economy, that is the economy of the sea, in our country. If then from the national borders it widens the look to the world one must agree with the scholars who have long been talking about our century as well as of the Blue Century: 90% of world trade by volume and 80% by value by sea; the 95% of the data and telephone traffic passes under the sea where they also run pipelines carrying oil, gas and water. And again: the 60% of global oil resources are offshore. The oceans, which host the 50% of all living species on the planet, provide 20% of animal proteins and 5% of the total proteins of the human diet. In the near future by the sea and the oceans could come the renewable energy capable of feeding the planet.

Data and scenarios of the maritime future drawn by experts in the book Geopolitics of the sea they require an urgent reflection on what national interests are and what are the necessary and useful strategies to guarantee our country not only the prosperity that comes from the sea, but also the safety of maritime borders and the so-called motorways of the sea. It's still. The great global problems: free access and sustainable exploitation of global commons like the marine subsoil, the fish resources, the Arctic and the Antarctic.

In a scenario where everything is changing fast and even the Mare Nostrum it is no longer alone Nostrum but there have appeared global economic powers, such as China, defining national interests, inside and outside the borders, means drawing a maritime strategy, in the broadest sense of the term, involving the political, economic, military, industrial but also social and cultural. A strategy that can also bring about the establishment of a single guide (so-called Ministry of the Sea) that responds to all the specificities of the national maritime sector, implementing its enormous potential by responding to the increasingly pressing demands of the sector to the benefit of the economy and security of the country.

Is the possibility of peaceful and responsible use of the sea a national interest? This is the basic question that calls on the experts who, with diversified perspectives and skills, indicate to the country system a priority for the future: to define the Italian maritime strategy for the Blue Century.
