Air Defense: two Aeronautica Militare fighter take off immediately

Two F-2000 Eurofighter fighters of the Italian Air Force, in readiness for the airspace surveillance service, took off quickly today morning from the Istrana air base (TV), headquarters of the 51st Wing, to intercept a AirFrance's Boeing 777 aircraft, which had suddenly lost radio contact with the Italian air traffic agency.

The Eurofighters intercepted the French aircraft over the skies of Lombardy where they identified the civil aircraft and made sure that the crew had restored regular radio contacts with the air traffic authorities.

The alarm aircraft took off following the scramble order received by the CAOC (Combined Air Operation Center) of Torrejon, the NATO body responsible for the airspace surveillance service. To reduce intervention times to a minimum, linked to the particular situation of need, the two military aircraft have overcome the sound barrier; even though the altitude was high, the weather conditions of wind and temperatures amplified the propagation of the shock wave making it particularly audible on the ground.

The Air Force ensures the surveillance of the national airspace 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with an integrated defense system, right from the time of peace, with that of other NATO countries. The service is guaranteed - for the surveillance, identification and control part - by the 24th DAMI Group of Poggio Renatico (FE) and by the 11nd Radar Group of Licola (NA), relative to the in-flight intervention, by the 22th Wing ( GR), 4 ° Stormo (BA) and 36 ° Stormo (TP), all equipped with Eurofighter fighter aircraft. Starting from January 37, the Italian Air Force also activated a Eurofighter F-2017 cell at the 2000st Wing of Istrana in order to optimize the coverage of the national airspace, with a view to general reduction of intervention times and timely contrast of any threats.
