Defense: German banks are increasingly investing in nuclear weapons companies

The Ican Campaign (International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons) and the Dutch NGO Pax published the 2018 Report "Dont 'bank on the bomb" (do not invest in the bomb ") which registered a massive increase of 81 billion dollars in new investments in nuclear weapons production in 2017, compared to 2016. Worldwide, according to the study, financial institutions have invested about $ 525 billion in nuclear weapons manufacturers.

As for the German sector, the report highlights that between 2014 and 2017, banks and insurers in Germany have invested about ten billion dollars in companies that assemble or maintain nuclear weapons. German banks bought shares in disputed companies or granted them loans.

More specifically:

  • Deutsche Bank has invested 6,6 billions of dollars;
  • Commerzbank 1,2 billion;
  • Allianz 1,03 billion.

According to the ICAN study, a Volksbanks joint venture, DZ-Bank, increased its investments from $ 2014 million to $ 2017 million between 66 and 470. Most of the money went to a US defense contractor, Northrop Grumman, which manufactures, among other things, ICBMs for the US nuclear arsenal.
