Germany: end of the "Eutm Som" military mission in Somalia

According to the Nova agency, the German government would have ratified the end of the European military training mission "Eutm Som", expiring at the end of March 2018, in Somalia, one of the most dangerous countries in Africa.

The mission is considered highly dangerous because the militias of the al Shabab terrorist group have repeatedly attacked the airport. The mission, which sees the involvement of just 20 German trainers in Somalia, is certainly one of the smallest in terms of military contingent but, certainly, it turns out to be one of the most dangerous actions undertaken by the European country in the international context.

The German Armed Forces have been active in the Horn of Africa since 2010, the year in which Somalia was the center of international attention as armed pirates hijacked merchant ships and extorted millions of ransom, particularly for Western crews.

For several years, the German military has been training the Somali army.

The European mission, whose aim has always been to support the formation of the Somali Regular Army, has been quantitatively limited from the start. Five German soldiers who have been stationed from the beginning at the "General Dhagabadan Training Camp", located at the Mogadishu airport, and at the Somali Defense Minister.

The German Foreign Minister, the Social Democrat Sigmar Gabriel (SPD), said recently that the effort of German soldiers is likely to be ineffective, even if their presence was important for the collection of information on politics and military order .
