Rwanda, with the United Nations Refugee Agency, initiates a joint refugee review

The Rwanda government together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have launched a program to verify refugees and asylum seekers residing in Rwanda.

The joint program, launched in the Rwandan capital Kigali, is aimed at updating information and verifying the physical presence of refugees in the country through biometric data. Facilitate the access of refugees to government services, increase the possibility of their employment and help them move more freely in the country and abroad, said Rwandan Minister for Disaster Management and Refugees, Jeanne d'Arc Debonheur .

Updated information and documentation will enable better protection and assistance to refugees and asylum seekers in Rwanda and will contribute to better planning by the government, UNHCR and stakeholders dealing with refugees, according to the Refugee Ministry.

The verification program began with urban refugees in Kigali and in the district of Huye in southern Rwanda, and then moved to the six refugee camps in the country. The registration of refugees and asylum seekers in Rwanda is conducted jointly by the Rwandan government and the UNHCR. Friday's launch followed a May 2017 agreement signed by Rwanda and UNHCR to facilitate data sharing on the identity of refugees in Rwanda.
