UN Guterres: "Stop this hell in Syria"

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says it is "the best time to stop this hell on earth" in the eastern region of Ghouta, Syria.

Guterres also appealed to warring parties to comply with a 30 day ceasefire, unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council members 15.

Guterres says he welcomes the resolution, but added that Council resolutions "are meaningful only if they are effectively enforced". He says he expects "resolution to be immediately implemented and supported". Guterres also called for the safe, durable and unhindered supply of humanitarian aid and evacuation services for the sick and injured.

A monitoring group and Syrian paramedics say that despite the resolution of the Security Council ceasefire, the new airstrikes in the rebel suburbs east of Damascus have killed 10 people.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory, headquartered in Great Britain and the Syrian civil defense of the opposition, also known as White Helmets, have reported that, following an air attack shortly after midnight in the suburb of Douma, there they would be 9 dead.

Despite the unanimous approval of a Security Council resolution for a ceasefire of 30 days across Syria, the death toll, in the eastern part of Ghouta, on the border with Damascus, in two days rises to 24. The situation remains extremely critical.
