Iran condemns US appeal to the UN for internal unrest

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif criticized the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) emergency meeting saying that a gross foreign policy mistake has been made for Washington, the Tasnim news agency reported today. "The United Nations Security Council rejected the American attempt to use the UN mandate, the majority stressed the need to fully implement the JCPOA (Iranian nuclear agreement) and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other administrations", he tweeted Zariff. On Friday, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at the request of the United States to discuss the recent protests and the economic condition in Iran. According to unconfirmed reports, at least 20 people, including civilians and security forces, were killed in the riots and hundreds of people arrested. Iran blamed the United States, Britain and Saudi Arabia for inciting violence in recent protests in Iran. Furthermore, Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Gholam Ali Khoshroo, condemned the UNSC debate on the recent protests in Iran on Friday. "This is nothing more than a desperate attempt by the US administration to escape, as it has lost every shred of moral, political and legal authority and credibility in the eyes of the entire world," Khoshroo said addressing the Friday meeting.
