Iraq: 23 IS members killed and 9 arrested during a major joint operation in Mosul

An important joint operation between the army and the police was carried out south of Mosul, the former stronghold of the self-proclaimed "caliphate" in Iraq. In the operation at least 23 militia of the self-styled Islamic State were killed and nine others arrested.

The news was reported by the chief of police of Nineveh, General Wathiq al Hamdani, quoted by local media. The raid involved the districts of Hammam al Aalil and Qayyarah and follows three previous operations directed against the sleeper cells of the terrorist group, with the aim of preventing Daesh (Arabic acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) from reactivating. Al Hamdani stressed that "the parents of the terrorists" were also leading the security forces.

Meanwhile, a few hours ago the news of a car bomb exploded today in front of the shrine of Khader Elias, in the district of Daquq, which is located 25 kilometers south of Baghdad. The news was announced by Saad Maan, spokesman for the Iraqi Interior Ministry. Fortunately, the explosion would have caused no casualties.
