Kidnapped an American and a Canadian in Nigeria

Unknown to the authorities kidnapped an American and a Canadian in the Nigerian northern state of Kaduna, killing two police officers, police said today.
Kidnappings are widespread in Nigeria, where internal security is weak, even if they affect other Nigerians in a predominant manner. However, abductions of foreigners are not uncommon.
The American and Canadian were attacked by unknown gunmen around Kagarko on their way from the city of Kaduna to the capital Abuja on Tuesday evening, Mukhtar Aliyu, a spokesman for the Kaduna state police, said over the phone.

Kaduna, one of the main cities in the north, is about two hours drive from Abuja.
"The two police escorts attached to them involved the kidnappers in a fierce armed battle, which resulted in the unfortunate death of the two policemen," he said, without giving further details.
A spokesperson for the US embassy in Nigeria declined to comment. The Canadian embassy was not immediately available for comment.
In October, the kidnappers took four Brits to the Delta state in the south. Three were released after the negotiations, but the other, Ian Squire, was killed.
The Abuja-Kaduna road has long been a haunt for the kidnappers. Last February, two German archaeologists were kidnapped in the region, although they were later released.
