Leonardo: framework contract with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology for new meteorological radars

Leonardo, through its German subsidiary Selex ES GmbH, obtained an important contract from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to supply and install the latest generation C and S weather radar in the country. The contract provides for the exclusive supply by Leonardo of new weather systems for the next four years and includes an option to extend the business up to a period of ten years.

The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national agency responsible for monitoring weather, climate and water resources. The agency offers a wide range of services to organizations, businesses and citizens by providing timely and accurate information on a varied and complex natural environment, characterized by extreme events such as droughts, floods, fires, storms, tsunamis and tropical cyclones. Through forecasts, weather warnings, monitoring and consulting, the agency provides one of the most important and used national services in the Australian territories and the Antarctic region.

The Bureau of Meteorology currently operates a national network of 62 meteorological radars which will be replaced with Leonardo's advanced systems, produced in the Neuss plant (Germany), over the duration of the framework contract.

Leonardo is a world leader in technologies for meteorological radar systems with a range of advanced solutions in C, S and X bands. In the last 20 years, more than 400 METEOR systems have been sold and put into operation in more than 80 countries. Among the most significant contracts in recent years, supplies to the Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Canadian government's environmental protection policy and programs, and to the Brazilian Center for monitoring and alerting natural disasters (CEMADEN), which is part of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The contract announced today, obtained by Leonardo following an international tender, confirms the technological and innovation capabilities in the production of meteorological radars and contributes to the consolidation of international leadership in the sector. In presenting its offer, the company was supported by the subsidiary of Leonardo in Australia, which will provide after-sales assistance and installation services in the country.
