Pence in Israel while Abu Mazen flies to Brussels

US Vice President Mike Pence traveled to the Middle East to reaffirm Washington's position on Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, while the leader of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Abu Mazen, flew to Brussels to ask for the support of 'EU against the new policy of US president Donald Trump in the region. Speaking at the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, Pence reiterated the decision of the American president, Donald Trump, to move the diplomatic representation, announcing that it will open by the end of 2019. “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and as such President Trump has instructed the State Department to immediately begin preparations to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This will open before the end of next year ”. A speech that was not attended by the Arab-Israeli parliamentarians who in protest, before taking the floor in front of the assembled deputies, started screaming and showing signs, ending up being expelled from the hall. Trump's decision, announced last December 6, caused a very deep break between the PNA and the American administration, which is no longer considered by the Palestinians as a reliable and third party in the difficult Arab-Israeli dialogue. For the PNA, the future of Jerusalem must be defined in the context of negotiations for an overall solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and not the result of unilateral actions. For his part, Pence urged the Palestinian leadership to “return to the negotiating table”: “Peace can only come through dialogue. Immediate condemnation of the Palestine Liberation Organization which attacked Pence's "messianic" speech, a "gift for extremists". Meanwhile, from Brussels Abu Mazen tries to find support in the EU in his battle against the American decision, launching an appeal to the member states to recognize "quickly" the State of Palestine: "We sincerely consider the EU a true partner and friend, and therefore we ask its member states to quickly recognize the state of Palestine ”. “We confirm that there is no contradiction between the recognition and the resumption of negotiations. For her part, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, said she wanted to "reassure President Abu Mazen and his delegation of the EU's firm commitment to a two-state solution with Jerusalem as the capital of the two states, the State of Israel and the State of Palestine. This remains the EU position based on the Oslo accords and international consensus. The EU also opposes “settlement activities, which we consider illegal. Mogherini asked Palestinians and Israelis to "speak and act with a sense of responsibility", working with the international community. “We will host an extraordinary session of the donor group for Palestine here in Brussels on 31 January” which will be an “opportunity to bring together the parties and all relevant actors”.
