(by Francescomaria Tuccillo) In Milan and Brianza, in Florence, in Avellino and in Aversa: at least eight homeless people have died of cold in recent days, in some Italian Polis.
It is unacceptable, it seems to us, the only idea that a human being can die of cold because he does not have a place to shelter himself. It is contrary to all human and humanistic values that we have within and incompatible with civil life.
As well as security, human and social generosity is also a testing ground for the #Polis: ensuring everyone an answer to their vital needs - including sleeping under a roof - should be at the center of their mission.
It would be if they were - or come back to be - as we have already defined borrowing a beautiful expression of Giorgio La Pira: city on a human scale, then a political expression of proximity and humanity. This is the model we think of when we talk about #EuropadeiPopoliedellePolis.
To be sure, a European Polis that seems to reflect this vision by dealing without hesitating the homeless, guided with a steady hand by a courageous leader, is there. It's not big, but it counts. It is the Vatican City.
