🎤 Thales Alenia Space: the 5g arrives at the Pyeongchang games

The 5g technology was presented at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in the "5G Champion" project, which is part of the Horizon 2020 program funded by the European Commission.

To communicate it is Thales Alenia Space that is involved in the project and that has as partner Cea / Leti (electronics and IT lab) and Nokia. Part of the demonstration, let us know the Thales 67% joint venture and Leonardo 33% consisted in equipping the buses, available to spectators to reach the different sites of the Olympic games, with 5G technology and screens with high quality 3D video playback. "Passengers appreciated the very high-speed connectivity, thanks to the buses acting as relays between the 5G network and the WiFi signal transmitted on the same buses.

In addition to involvement in this demonstration, Thales Alenia Space reports that it is achieving "a pioneering position in all the initiatives designed for the perfect integration of satellite communications with the 5G network infrastructure".

The goal is obviously to provide uninterrupted access to 5G services at any time and anywhere ".

Thales Alenia Space "also offers all the necessary technologies to guarantee controllability, or to guarantee positioning accuracy within a tenth of a meter for geolocation services offered by the 5G".

Thales Alenia Space "is already developing the Kass satellite navigation system for the South Korean Space Agency Kari, on behalf of the Korean Ministry for Regional Development, Infrastructure and Transport. Kass, explains the jount venture, "will allow the country to improve the positioning performance offered by the Gps, with updates planned to ensure compatibility with the Galileo and Glonass satellite positioning systems". The South Korean Kass system has as its initial objective the aeronautical applications, including the "Safety of Life" services but, adds Thales Alenia Space, "it could also play an important role in the development of 5G geolocation services in South Korea". "The space segment adds value to the development of the 5G by extending the coverage and transmission capacity of the network" ensures the company and "this will allow 5G networks to respond efficiently and reliably to the needs of emerging users in the aeronautical, rail transport sectors and maritime, logistics, media, leisure, security, education, health and agriculture.
