Usa: Menendez acquitted by four of the thirteen counts of accusations

Judge William Walls today pleaded not guilty US Democratic Party senator Robert Menendez and Salomon Melgen to seven of the 18 indictments for which they were indicted last year.

The sentence comes a few days after the US government decided to start a new trial given the impossibility of the jury to reach a unanimous verdict.

Menendez was cleared of the charge of lobbying the State Department for a contract to secure a port for 500 million dollars that a company of the doctor had with the Dominican Republic. Prosecutors claimed that Menendez had been bribed with private flights, hotels and donations of $ 750.000 dollars to organizations that funded his election campaign.

The senator will still have to answer nine charges, while the doctor of eight, in addition to having to face the prison for a conviction for fraud to Medicare health care. For Menendez, allegations of corruption and false financial statements remain standing for the new trial.
