Sonic weapon in Cuba: brain damage to Western diplomats

The government of Canada has announced a plan to evacuate the family members of its diplomats who are in Cuba, due to medical problems caused by an alleged technology device linked to espionage. These concerns have persisted among U.S. personnel and Canadian diplomatic personnel since the fall of 2016, when several staff members of the U.S. Embassy in Havana reported suffering from sudden and unexplained hearing loss. Eventually, their symptoms became so severe that some American diplomats decided "to cancel their tours soon and return to the United States," according to the Associated Press, which published this news in August 2016.

Since that time, the US State Department has stated that 21 diplomats have been diagnosed with a brain injury. In response to these concerns, Washington recalled most of its diplomats from Havana last September and issued a travel warning advising its citizens to stay away from the island. Now the Canadian embassy has said it will evacuate all members stationed in Havana, according to the BBC. The government of Canada is believed to have made the decision to evacuate its citizens after confirming that at least 10 members of diplomatic families living on the island have been diagnosed with "unexplained brain symptoms," according to Canadian government officials. These include regular periods of dizziness and nausea, as well as difficulty concentrating.

Interestingly, Canadian experts have rejected theories, mostly from the United States, that the mysterious brain symptoms came from a mysterious secret weapon that emits sonic waves. But some Canadian experts said the symptoms suffered by diplomats and their families may indicate a new disease, the cause of which still remains unknown. Cuba has rejected Washington's repeated accusations that it blamed the incidents on a third party - most notably Russia - of conducting sonic strikes against Western diplomats on the island. Cuban officials have described the allegations as tricks in a game of "political manipulation" that was invented by the White House to damage bilateral relations between the United States and the Caribbean island government.
