After the firm position of Christophe Castaner who had answered "I in Rome, I do not let anyone call me", words come that seem to open a window to the serious diplomatic crisis between the two countries.
Castaner, speaking to the microphones of “France Inter” declared that Salvini responded to his statement that “we had misunderstood each other and that it was an invitation. As soon as the diplomatic discussions between the heads of state have taken place, I will resume contact with Matteo Salvini to work together and to see each other ”.
The French Minister of the Interior, then returning to talk about the issues that led to the crisis between the two countries, explained that he distinguishes the current situation of relations between Italy and France on two levels: the political and the diplomatic.
“There is a political debate. French President Emmanuel Macron is a politician. I am a politician and therefore I can worry about the growth of populisms and not only in Europe. And you have to fight them. And in this I consider Salvini as a political opponent ”, the minister replying to a question from the interviewer who asked him if it was not the French government talking about fighting 'nationalist leprosy' that inflamed the debate between the two countries.
Speaking of relations with the Italian interior minister, Castaner added "we have always been in contact" with the Italian government. “Before this Salvini sentence we were at a meeting on international traffic in Bucharest. We are in contact on the issues that are relevant to the safety of the French and Italians. We would be idiots if a political disagreement prevents us from working together ”, the French minister stresses. At this moment, he notes, “there is a diplomatic tension. And in diplomacy, at a certain point, the end of recess must be whistled. When there is a Deputy Prime Minister, Luigi Di Maio, who comes to France to meet yellow vests and who makes hostile declarations without preventing anyone, diplomatic procedures are initiated ”, explains Castaner. "But a political disagreement cannot lead to a risk with regard to the safety of the French and Italians".
