Eni-Aeroporti di Roma agreement for the development of biofuels for aviation

Eni and Aeroporti di Roma have signed a strategic agreement to promote decarbonisation initiatives in the aviation sector and accelerate the ecological transition process of airports.

Eni has been producing HVO hydrogenated biofuels since 2014 in the Venice and Gela biorefineries thanks to the proprietary Ecofining ™ technology, which also allows the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from raw materials of vegetable origin and waste. Eni's new “net zero carbon to 2050” strategy will make it possible to supply a variety of fully decarbonised products, combining environmental and financial sustainability. The recent merger of the renewable and retail businesses, the development of biorefineries and the production of biomethane and the sale of low-carbon energy carriers and mobility services in service stations, are among the main levers to undertake the path of decarbonisation.

ADR, the first Italian airport hub and the best airport in Europe in the last three years, has been carbon neutral since 2013 and has decided to completely zero its emissions by 2030. An objective accredited by the first and only ACA 4+ certification to a airport European - the highest certification on the reduction of CO2 emissions at airports - and consolidated with the recent issue - in this case the first airport in the world - of a 500 million euro Sustainability-Linked Bond that directly links the cost of debt to results of sustainability actually achieved.

The agreement provides for the development of decarbonisation and digitalisation projects to facilitate the transition to a “smart hub” of the airports managed by ADR. In particular, the agreement will see the introduction in the coming months of sustainable fuels for aviation (SAF - Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and for ground handling (HVO - Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) which allow a reduction in CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels. Furthermore, a joint program for the development of sustainable mobility services and distribution to end customers will be defined, as well as energy integration projects, in line with the most advanced transition and digitalization models.

"Eni has started the transformation of its business since 2014 - declared Giuseppe Ricci, General Manager Energy Evolution of Eni - playing an active role in promoting the circular economy, the development of innovative technologies and sustainable mobility, which aims to a synergistic mix of solutions to minimize environmental impact and increase efficiency. We are ready to make our technologies and our low carbon products available for the recovery of the sector, in an integrated perspective of sustainability and innovation ».

"When Italian excellences team up - commented Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma - ambitious projects of the necessary scope can be defined and implemented to ensure a true environmental transition and the relaunch of a strategic sector for our country. , like the aeronautical one. We are strongly committed to providing carriers with biofuels already in the coming months, in advance of expectations, confirming the desire to make Fiumicino and Ciampino two of the most sustainable airports in the world. The maximum attention we devote to sustainability, as recognized also at an international level, has always been a development driver, now fully integrated into our business ".
