Beware of the navigator: the GPS gives the wrong indication of the limit of 60 km / h and he is fined

The man asked the car manufacturer to cover part of the violation, as the information was wrong. "Responsibility is always the driver" The "Rights Window": the navigator is only a driving aid but you must never lose your attention from the road

(by Giovanni D'Agata) How many times have we dealt with a surfer who does a tantrum? A man turned into Avenue de Provence in Paris and slowed down because the navigator pointed to a speed limit of 60 km / h. But he saw a flash and the reason he found out when he arrived home a fine of 250 francs. The limit on that stretch of road was indeed 50 km / h.

"I relied on what my car told me - snaps the motorist -, assuming that obviously it was correct". Now the man claims that part of the fine is paid by the manufacturer of his vehicle. A request that the car manufacturer has no attention to accept: «It may happen that the system does not detect the speed limits exactly. Therefore, it is always the responsibility of the motorist to correctly recognize road signs. It is also indicated in the instructions when purchasing the vehicle ».

The motorist, however, claims he never found errors in the system, which is why he always relied on it. "In case of doubt, then, it would be better if it did not indicate anything." "If the GPS indicates to continue straight and in that direction there is a flight of stairs, the motorist stops and changes route. The same must be done with speed limits. Ultimately, responsibility always lies with those who are behind the wheel ». The advice of course is always to take the suggestions of technology with the pliers, accept the support as a contribution to do better, but never act blindly and distract from the real dangers of the road.

Not always, in fact, notes Giovanni D'Agata, president of the “Rights Desk”, these navigators are perfectly updated in the mappings, and also electronic devices are subject to malfunction errors. It is the sad truth, in a world that is increasingly moving towards autonomous driving, but which risks arriving there with so many questions and fears.
