A 73-year-old man in imminent danger of life was transported this afternoon with a HH-139 helicopter of the 85th CSAR Center (Combat Search and Rescue - Search and Rescue) of the 15th Wing of the Air Force from Ponza to Latina, where he was transferred to the hospital for specialist care.
The patient was accompanied and followed throughout the journey by a medical team, which had previously been embarked in Latina before heading to the island of Ponza. The mission was particularly delicate due to the adverse weather situation, resulting in limited visibility, conditions in which the Air Force crews are constantly training to operate.
The aircraft used, one of the assets that the Italian Air Force makes available, in operational readiness, for emergency medical transport and search and rescue missions, took off from Pratica di Mare airport, headquarters of the 85th CSAR Center .
The take-off order was given by the Top Situation Room of the Air Squad Command, the Air Force Operations Room that deals - among others - with the coordination and management of this kind of missions in favor of the community upon request. of hospitals and prefectures throughout the national territory. The mission was then planned and managed by the Air Operations Command of Poggio Renatico (FE).
There are hundreds, every year, of flight hours carried out by the Air Force aircraft for emergency medical transport, both for people in danger of life and for teams and / or organs, for humanitarian flights, or for search and rescue missions. Crews of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 15th Wing of Cervia and the SAR (Search and Rescue) Centers employees, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare are ready 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, to take off in a very short time for any destination in Italy and abroad even in particularly adverse weather conditions.
