Do not sleep has a social cost of billions of euros, reveals a study by Rand Europe

(Giovanni D'Agata - Rights Desk) A research reveals some in-depth aspects of the effects of insomnia or lack of sleep, in particular as regards the economic consequences. A study estimated the costs in Europe of workers suffering from insomnia or not getting enough rest at a few billion euros a year. However, a problem that is rather ignored by companies. Resting, sleeping, unplugging is in fact increasingly difficult to do in a world of work in which many managers pride themselves on sleeping very little.

But the lack of sleep causes considerable costs for companies, as shown by a study by economist Marco Hafner, of the research institute RAND Europe. Hafner explains that this research revealed that “those who sleep less than 6 hours a night lose between 5 and 10 days of work per year compared to those who sleep between 7 and 8 hours a night on average. Those who sleep little are more often sick and are also less productive. He gets distracted more easily at work and has a harder time processing information ”Every year, fatigue causes the loss of 4,5 million working days. A burden on the economy, the study says. With costs that are estimated between 5 and 8 billion euros.

Lack of sleep depends on our way of life, says occupational psychologist Theo Wehner, who has dedicated an exhibition to the topic in Pfäffikon and explains: “In our culture we think we are productive only when we are awake. We do not give enough value to the hours of sleep. ”It would therefore be in the interest of companies to promote adequate rest. “Two aspects already known and important for a healthy life, such as nutrition and movement, must be complemented with a third aspect, sleep,” adds Wehner.

RAND Europe is a non-profit research institute that helps improve policy and decision making through research and analysis. However, these are further good reasons to try to live a life with less stress and in search of the right daily rest to feel good about yourself and with others.
