Admiral Girardelli on a visit to Fincantieri di Castellammare di Stabia

This morning the Chief of Staff of the Navy, admiral of team Valter Girardelli, accompanied by the engineer Angelo Fusco, director of the Fincantieri military ships division, visited the Castellammare di Stabia plant, where it is under construction nave Trieste, the new multi-role amphibious unit of the Navy.

The activity, which also saw the participation of other representatives of Fincantieri and of the Logistic Commander of the Navy Admiral of Squadra Edoardo Serra, falls on the day of the 88 anniversary of the launch of Amerigo Vespucci School Ship, which right in the historic building site of Castellammare di Stabia, in the distant 1931, touched the sea for the first time. That today is therefore a date with high emotional content for the Armed Forces, in the name of the historical continuity and the indissoluble link existing between the Navy, the City of Castellammare di Stabia and the historic plant, already founded in 1783 for large buildings naval ships of the Real Marina of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In addition to the "most beautiful sailing ship in the world" in this historic shipyard, 200 military ships have been launched including the old destroyer Caio Duilio, the cruiser Vittorio Veneto and the ship Ardito.

Tradition and innovation are still today the founding pillars of the Navy. The Stabia shipyard is the symbol of this link in the sign of a maritime renewal, a guarantee of a Made in Italy which brings Italian excellence to the seas of the world and which finds new momentum with modern units of the Navy such as Trieste, a jewel of technology and electronics.

The construction of the new Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) is part of the fleet renewal program that aims to replace the various naval units now at the end of their operational life which, for reasons of natural aging, must be sent for disposal. Nave Trieste, which will be launched in the coming months from the airport in the traditional way, has been designed to be a flexible, modular, reliable, low environmental impact, easily reconfigurable, according to the concept "one fits all", Ie the capacity for the same class of units to carry out the missions that traditionally belonged to different types of platforms.

It will therefore allow projecting and supporting - in areas of crisis - the landing force and the national capacity of projection from the sea, will ensure the strategic transport of a large number of vehicles, personnel and materials, but can also contribute to tasks of "Civil Protection" "For the rescue of disaster populations, being able to also ensure command and control functions for non-military emergencies of various types.
