Air Force. World Meteorological Day

The Air Force Meteorological Service meets school children to address the issue of the future of Weather, Climate and Water across the generations

Today, March 23, World Meteorological Day is celebrated and for the occasion the Air Force organized in Rome, at the CONI Hall of Honor from 16 to 17 pm, a meeting with the second grade secondary school students of Lazio on the theme indicated by the World Meteorological Organization: “The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations”.

The purpose of the event - which will be moderated by Dr. Chiara Giallonardo, journalist and television presenter - is to bring the younger generations closer to the issues of climate change, illustrating the tasks of national institutions and, in particular, the role of the Air Force in atmospheric monitoring activities in the context of existing national and global collaborations under the aegis of the World Meteorological Organization.

The meeting will be attended by Brigadier General Luca Baione in charge of the Air Force Meteorological Service and Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization, Prof. Federico Benuzzi, theoretical physicist professor at the Liceo Bassi in Bologna, professional actor and scientific popularizer, , Colonel Luca Parmitano, test pilot and ESA astronaut connected from Houston, Capt. Andrea Patassa, test pilot and member of the ESA astronaut reserve, Lt. Chiara Ludovico, meteorologist and environmental engineer, the content creator Tudor Laurini aka Klaus, the Lgt. Giancarlo Simeoli, sailing champion, the synchronized swimming world champion Lucrezia Ruggiero and Prof. Alberto Pirni, Professor of Moral Philosophy at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna – Pisa.

Since 1950, the Air Force has acted as National Representative at the World Meteorological Organization and, through the Meteorological Service, has worked for the benefit of the national and international community and is committed to disseminating meteorological knowledge through school projects, courses for transversal skills and orientation (PCTO), visits to military airports, scientific and operational centers to promote understanding of the complex process that leads to weather forecasting. Furthermore, in the summer periods the Air Force organizes "summer camps" at the main offices of the Meteorological Service with short familiarization courses with environmental and climatological issues.

World Meteorological Day this year is included in the events organized by the Armed Forces to celebrate the Centenary of the Air Force.
