Aeronautics, lifesaving flight: infant transported urgently from Cagliari to Rome

The tiny patient of just one day old was transported in a thermal cradle with a Falcon 900EX aircraft of the 31 ° Stormo di Ciampino

The flight carried out by a Falcon 900EX aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino for the urgent transport of a newborn from Cagliari to Rome ended in the afternoon.

The newborn, just one day old, needed to receive urgent and life-saving specialist care, which is why the immediate intervention of the Air Force aircraft was essential.

The very young patient, coming from the “Duilio Casula” hospital in Monserrato, was boarded at Cagliari airport on a Falcon 900EX aircraft around 13:25. During the transfer flight, which took place inside a special thermal cradle, the little one was accompanied by his father and a medical team who ensured health care. The aircraft landed at Ciampino airport around 14.20 pm where the tiny patient, transferred aboard an ambulance, continued his journey to the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome. The crew of the 31 ° Stormo subsequently resumed operational readiness service.

The flight, requested by the Prefecture of Cagliari, was immediately arranged and coordinated by the Top Situation Room of the Air Squad Command, the operations room of the Air Force which has among its tasks also that of activating and managing urgent medical transport, giving the order to take off to the aircraft that the Armed Force keeps ready, 24 hours a day, in various bases, for this kind of need.

Missions of this type cannot be separated from maximum timeliness, guaranteed by meticulous organization and well-established procedures. Every year, hundreds of hours of flight are carried out by the Air Force aircraft for emergency medical transport, both for people in danger of life and for teams and / or organs, for humanitarian flights, for search and rescue missions. Crews of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 15th Wing of Cervia and the SAR (Search and Rescue) Centers employees, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare are ready 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, to take off in a very short time, with vehicles and crews able to operate, even in complex weather conditions, for any destination in Italy and abroad at the request of hospitals, prefectures and, in the case of missions abroad, of diplomatic representations.
