After Pence's accusations of Iran, Pompeo meets Federica Mogherini

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met the EU's top diplomat in Brussels on Friday, a day after Vice President Mike Pence accused the traditional American European allies of trying to weaken US sanctions against Iran.

The meeting with Federica Mogherini, head of EU foreign policy, was scheduled before Pence's charges against the European powers during a Middle East peace conference in Warsaw.

Mogherini, who helped seal the 2005 nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers, greeted Pompeo in front of a large number of cameras at the EU headquarters in Brussels before heading to a conference room for a breakfast of work. Mogherini shook his head and canceled a question asked by the media asking him to express his opinion on Pence's speech in Warsaw last Thursday, which pointed the finger at the European Union held responsible for an action aimed at breaking the impact of US economic sanctions on Iran.

The accusations made by Pence against the allies (Germany, France and Great Britain) reflect Washington's strategy of isolating Iran. Trump last year withdrew the United States from the Iranian 2015 agreement, under which Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions.

Last Thursday, Mogherini speaking to NATO, before the comments of Pence, had declared that the United States and the European Union "have different opinions" on the Iranian nuclear agreement stating that it is essential for European security to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.

European countries, while sharing Washington's concerns about Iran's involvement in the Yemen and Syria wars, deem the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement to be a mistake and have promised to try to save the agreement until Iran will continue to respect it.

France, Germany and Great Britain agreed in January to open a new channel for trade with Iran to avoid US sanctions through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to help Iranian oil and gas exports against purchases of EU goods.

However, the commercial vehicle will probably take months to become operational and the diplomats have said that they will only be used for smaller exchanges, such as humanitarian or food products.
