During the last Agrifish, Slovenia raised the dramatic situation of the pig market. In Europe, there has been a 30% decline in prices, with tendencies to further decline, for carcasses while piglet prices, despite a recovery in recent weeks, have fallen by 40%. Added to this are the fears of importing countries about African swine fever which has spread to some European territories, starting with China, a destination that had experienced an impressive trade flow.

"We cannot ignore the difficult situation that the pig market is going through, which we have reached after a period characterized by fluctuating prices that have led to upward pressures, both in production and in relative prices - declared the Undersecretary for Agricultural Policies, Giuseppe L'Abbate - We share the concerns about the possibility of activating private storage measures, which could also aggravate the situation when the product is put back on the market. On the other hand, we are more inclined to consider measures aimed at encouraging the slaughter of breeding stock - concluded L'Abbate - so as to temporarily reduce production pressure ”.
