Lega, “Cassation ruling attack on democracy. Arm wrestling between the Carroccio and the Judiciary

The Supreme Court, gave the go-ahead to the prosecutors of Genoa to seize the funds to the League, "wherever they are" up to the 'threshold' of 48 million 969 thousand euro, sum that for the court of Liguria were accumulated thanks to a scam against the State on reimbursements to parties for electoral contributions and for which the 24 September 2017 had sentenced Umberto Bossi, treasurer Francesco Belsito and three other defendants. Now the review must be expressed, which will have to issue a new provision taking into consideration the binding indications of the Supreme Court.

On the matter Matteo Salvini said immediately that those figures are gone because they are spent in the last 10 years. Salvini has increased the dose saying that the request is the result of "a political process" and is the result of "a political sentence: try to put us out of law".

To Salvini echoes all the Carroccio that defines the sentence of the Supreme Court "An attack on democracy". Statements that the CSM has not digested. So the president of the magistrates' association, Francesco Minisci, replied to the heavy accusations: "it should be strongly reiterated that the magistrates do not take measures that constitute an attack on democracy or the Constitution, nor do they pursue political ends, but they issue sentences in the name of the Italian people, following rules and principles of law which they explain in their motivations".

The League, through the words of its leader, has remained firm on the line: "only in Turkey, in modern times, a democratic party voted by millions of people has been outlawed through the judiciary". The secretary of the League, some sources have leaked, intends to address directly to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, asking him to meet on his return from the trip to the Baltic countries. The reason is simple, explain those of the League: the ruling is a way to "put the first Italian party out of the game" and it is precisely on this issue that the head of state wants to raise awareness. From the Quirinale, at the moment, there are no comments on the Carroccio's request. Parliamentary sources note that the head of state never intervened on the decisions of the magistrates.

For the Democratic Party, the League's request is an act "of unprecedented gravity", given that the President of the Republic "is not only a neutral body but also the President of the High Council of the Judiciary. The vice-president of the Justice Commission of the Chamber Franco Vazio, on the other hand, said that calling into question President Mattarella represents a double and very serious lack of institutional respect.

At this point all that remains is to wait for the return of President Mattarella and see if there will be the meeting wanted by the League.
