Balkans: Heads of Government agree "road map" for the regional economic zone

The heads of government of the Western Balkan countries, gathered today in an informal meeting in Durres, Albania, have agreed to draft a roadmap for the implementation of the plan for the creation of a regional economic zone, agreed during the Summit Trieste of last July. Present at the meeting, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, defined the initiative for the Regional Economic Zone "an important tool for the countries of the region and their development. In recent years, exports of the six Balkan countries to the European Union have doubled, while those between the same countries have remained at the same level. This shows the great potential that could be exploited, "Hahn reiterated. Everything is ready on paper now. We have an action plan with 115 interventions to be implemented in view of a radical transformation in the movement of goods, capital services and skilled workers. This will make our region much more attractive for investment and trade, accelerating the pace of economic growth and well-being of our citizens, "said the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. "We are encouraged by the fact that at the political level there is a full unity of purpose. There is also a total synergy with the European Commission and with the World Bank, both involved at our request in this process ", the Albanian Prime Minister reiterated. By the next month of September each Balkan country will appoint its own coordinator to closely monitor the implementation of the regional economic zone plan.
