Bucharest, about 450 injured during protests against the government

According to law enforcement officials, more people were injured than 450, and those arrested on Friday night in Bucharest in protest against the left government and against corruption.

The center-right president Klaus Iohannis condemned the intervention of the police, which he called "brutal and disproportionate" and asked the prosecutor to open an investigation. According to hospital sources, most of the injured were rescued for inhaling tear gas, while others suffered bruises.

Among the injured, also about thirty agents, 11 of which were admitted to hospital.

According to a first estimate, there were at least 80 demonstrators who gathered in central Bucharest to denounce the "corruption of the government", among them thousands of expatriates and thousands of children.

Hundreds of people tried to force the police blocks and the agents responded with teargas and stinging sprays, rejecting them. Last month, President Klaus Iohannis fired the anti-corruption prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, who was considered a symbol of the fight against this type of crime, praised by Brussels. The anti-corruption prosecution (DNA), led by Kovesi, has led to a repression of corruption in the public administration provoking the anger of the political class that has accused it of abuse of power.

Events have also been organized in other cities such as Cluj, Sibiu and Timisoara.

Romania has been the scene of great protests against corruption in the country for more than a year, protests that recall those that led to the fall of the Ceausescu regime in 1989.

After the fall of the regime, with great effort the country managed to join the European Union in the 2007, but corruption remained one of the main problems. According to a survey of about 15% of Romanian parliamentarians, it appears to be investigated for corruption.
