"In order to prevent and combat the dramatic phenomenon of suicides within the prison population, I have signed a decree which provides for the assignment of 5 million euros to the penitentiary administration for the current year for the strengthening of treatment and psychological services in institutions , through the involvement of specialized experts and professionals external to the administration” so the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio.
"The annual budget allocation intended for the purposes of preventing the suicide phenomenon and reducing the distress of prisoners has more than doubled, confirming the government's commitment to promptly adopting the necessary measures to improve detention conditions in penitentiary institutions, even in view of a more structured and long-lasting intervention to be proposed as a priority in the next budget law".
