The Italian Banking Association supports the initiative promoted by the United Nations UNEP FI program and that commits the world of finance to orient its corporate strategies in view of an ever lower impact on the environment

Donation campaignOrienting corporate strategies towards compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement; concretely pursue the objective of reducing actions that have a negative impact on the environment and disseminate the results obtained in this sense; commit to supporting activities aimed at the well-being and prosperity of future generations; raise the awareness of all interest holders, involved in various capacities in the banking business, towards sustainability objectives; work to ensure that sustainability objectives become fully-fledged reference elements of internal governance systems; make public and verifiable the progress towards an increasingly complete respect for the principles of sustainable development, to be pursued through a responsible approach oriented towards the lowest environmental impact: this is the meaning of the six "Principles for responsible banking", adopted by the United Nations for the Environment and Finance (UNEP FI) and endorsed by the Italian Banking Association.

On the occasion of the presentation of the principles in the final version, which was held on the 22 September 2019 in New York within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly, the Executive Committee of the Italian Banking Association officially accepted the commitment to support the lines of action defined in the framework of UNEP FI, a partnership between the United Nations Environment Program (a United Nations Authority) and the world of global finance. The ABI is therefore preparing to spread the initiative among its associates, possibly also in the context of dedicated events, to be carried out in collaboration with UNEP FI and the other banks that have already signed up to follow up the principles, specifically defined:

1) 'Alignment'

2) 'Objectives',

3) 'Customers',

4) 'Stakeholders',

5) 'Governance and culture'

6) 'Transparency'.

The audience of the UNEP FI initiative was wide: not only individual banking groups but also associations of other European nations (in addition to the ABI, the banking associations of Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Norway, Holland and Spain) and non-European (Brazil and South Africa) and supranational and / or institutional bodies such as the European Banking Federation, the European Association of Cooperative Banks, the Islamic Finance Council and the Central Bank of Greece.
