North Korea launches new anti-aircraft missile after testing the hypersonic one

North Korea in a recent exercise launched a newly developed anti-aircraft missile. For months, Pyongyang has been testing new weapons including a never-before-seen hypersonic missile, ballistic missiles and a cruise missile with obvious nuclear capabilities. Last Friday, the United States called for an emergency meeting of the UN Council behind closed doors to discuss North Korea's rocket launches.

Jo Chol Su, director of the Department of International Organizations at the North Korean Foreign Ministry, said the Security Council meeting demonstrates "ignorance and invasion without any reason for sovereignty is a grave intolerable provocation".

Jo accused the Council of using double standards: he disputes North Korea's self-defense activities while remaining silent on joint US military exercises with allies.

"This is a denial of impartiality, objectivity and balance, the lifeline of United Nations activities and a clear manifestation of the double standard.Jo said in a statement released by the official KCNA news agency.

Jo warned that the Council could suffer consequences if it continues to violate North Korea's sovereignty "with double-crosses" by relying on American thinking.

Pyongyang has said in recent weeks that its weapons tests aim to enhance its defense capabilities just as other countries do, accusing Washington and Seoul of "double standards" and "hostile politics" towards it.

The tests show that North Korea tries to develop sophisticated weapons out of pure strategy by upping the ante on stalled talks aimed at dismantling its nuclear and missile programs in exchange for easing from US sanctions.

The United States criticized the launches as "destabilizing" for the security of the region, but also said it had no hostile intent towards North Korea, urging it to accept offers to resume negotiations.

White House spokesman Jen Psaki said on Friday that Washington is ready to discuss "A full range of issues": "We have made specific proposals for discussions with North Koreans, but to date we have not received a response," he told reporters.

HYPERSONIC TECHNOLOGY

Hypersonic means higher speed than supersonic, with Mach number greater than 10. Hypersonic missiles can travel very long distances in a very short time, even up to Mach 10 - 10 times the speed of sound. Several countries are developing this technology as to date there are no effective defense systems to counter it. The USA, China and Russia are carrying out projects to this effect, and now North Korea too. To date, however, Mach 5 has never been achieved.

The arms race therefore also passes by hypersonic speed, and it is precisely hypersonic the new missile recently tested by North Korea. The hypersonic planing missile Hwasong-8 was tested "with success”And marks an important one technological breakthrough, says the national agency KCNA, although international experts remain skeptical about the quality of the results achieved.

The strength of such a solution lies in speed and ability to move in the air: get to Mach 10 in fact, it would mean not being intercepted, and the missile in flight has a greater freedom to change its trajectory in case of need. This, however, on paper. Things would not be so in the North Korean case, since the speed reached would seem to have been equal to Mach 2,5.

The Pyongyang missile failed to travel 10 times the speed of sound and therefore, at present, it is still interceptable by defense systems.
