The medical transport in favor of a woman suffering from COVID-3 took place yesterday, Monday 19 May, who was transported from Cagliari to Bologna aboard a C-27J aircraft of the 46th Air Force Brigade of Pisa of the Italian Air Force.

The transport in high biocontainment was requested by the General Directorate of Civil Protection Sardinia and was managed by the IOC (Operational Command of the Joint Force Summit) which, through the Poggio Renatico Aerospace Operations Command, requested the immediate activation of a transport aircraft of the 46th Air Brigade, one of the assets that the Armed Force maintains in a state of readiness for support needs to the community.

The military aircraft, which took off from the Pisa air base, reached the military airport of Pratica di Mare where it embarked a medical team of the biocontainment team of the Main Infirmary and a special ATI (Aircraft Transit Isolator) stretcher for the transport of particularly infectious patients, then taking off again for Cagliari to load the patient. The latter, under the continuous supervision of the Air Force medical team, was then transferred to the destination facility.

Air transport flights in biocontainment represent one of the peculiarities expressed by the Italian Air Force. This capacity, ensured with a wide range of assets, depending on the type of intervention required, both with helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia, and with transport aircraft from the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the 14th Wing, makes it possible to transport in safety and in total isolation people suffering from highly infectious diseases. The Air Force biocontainment team, which refers to the Main Infirmary of Pratica di Mare, is made up of specialists - doctors and nurses - who are periodically trained and trained through courses and exercises.
