Dini to "La Stampa", good agreements with China but the European Union had to sign them

Italy is the first G7 country that decides to do so, but also the fifth in the European Union. The former minister explains in an interview with “La Stampa” that Angela Merkel is right when - she did so at the last Davos summit - she says that the future of all of us is around shared institutions. This agreement is now signed by Italy, but Europe should have signed it. Sooner or later the Union as a whole will do it ”. However, the United States appears very irritated by this decision. We - he says - are Westerners and our values are Western ones. But it cannot be denied that this administration is making many mistakes. Trump asks Europe for a greater contribution to the NATO budget: a legitimate request.

But it is a goal that can only be achieved gradually. Even Germany, which has large budget surpluses, has resistance to doing so. Since they don't get it, they attack Europe and aim to divide it. But if Washington attacks its most important ally in the world, what does it have left? Today Trump - he adds - is threatening to increase import duties on European cars from 10 to 25 percent: a measure that would put the entire automotive industry on the continent out of business. “The Chinese expansionist project is evident, but at least it is peaceful. The Americans are blackmailing us with tariffs, the Chinese are asking for cooperation ”. So the Italian government is right to sign the agreement with Beijing according to the former minister. "It is very good to sign the agreement, our exports to China are lower than France, Germany, England".

However, it remains problematic to cooperate so closely with a country where the economy is controlled by the state and respect for human rights is trampled on. It is true, - says Dini - about half of China's gross domestic product is made up of state-owned or subsidiary companies. And it is true that their democratic standards are very low. But even Italy forty years ago controlled almost half of GDP through state-owned companies. Economic interdependence serves to break down walls, but they are slow processes. China is the first domestic market in the world, and its economy is already integrated with the rest of the world. The process cannot be stopped, if anything it must be governed.

Washington is worried about the security problems arising from Chinese expansionism in Europe and in this respect the minister observes that the United States risks losing the race for technological domination of the world. “Of course I would prefer them to have the better of them, but it is useless to deny the reality. The US can and must regain strength, but this is not the way ". Where - he asks - are the very American Apple devices built? And how much do they cost more than Huawei's? How does the United States regain its leadership role in the world if the solution to its trade deficit is to expect China to buy more Made in the USA? “World competition is not a problem of barriers”, concluded Dini.
