Air Force helicopter brings couple of hikers stranded on the Maiella to safety

The delicate rescue operation was conducted last night by an HH-139B of the 85th SAR Center of the 15th Wing

The rescue of two hikers in the Mount Maiella area by the 85th SAR Center of Pratica di Mare ended successfully tonight.

Yesterday evening an HH-139B helicopter, on national readiness service for search and rescue, was alerted by the operations room of the SAR Center to search for a couple, a man and a woman, who had contacted the emergency services because they were blocked in the Maiella mountainous area. The request reached the Operations Room via the Abruzzo delegation of the CNSAS (National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps).

The crew quickly moved to the point where the couple was stranded where, due to strong gusts of wind and poor visibility, they had to make multiple attempts to approach the recovery point.

Thanks to the experience gained in numerous search and rescue missions in inaccessible areas, as well as the aid of night vision goggles, the crew managed to land near the two hikers. From here, the air rescue specialist reached the couple by land, now suffering from hypothermia, and then took them to the helicopter.

Once on board, the two were immediately warmed up with emergency thermal blankets and immediately transported to Pescara airport, where a medical team took them by ambulance to a hospital facility.

The crew then returned to the operating base to resume national readiness service.

The 85th SAR Center depends on the 15th Wing of Cervia which guarantees, 24 hours a day, every single day of the year, the search and rescue of flight crews in difficulty, also contributing to public utility activities such as the search for missing persons at sea or in the mountains, the emergency medical transport of patients in imminent danger of life and the rescue of seriously traumatized patients, also operating in complex meteorological conditions.

From its establishment to today, the crews of the 15th Wing have saved thousands of people in danger of their lives.

In addition to the 15th SAR Center in Pratica di Mare, the 85th SAR Center in Decimomannu (Cagliari), the 80nd SAR Center in Trapani, located throughout the national territory, also depend on the 82th Wing of Cervia, the 83rd SAR Group, located right on Cervia, and the 84th SAR Center in Gioia del Colle (Bari).
