Today the inauguration of the collaboration. A video mapping in the area in front of the facade of the Basilica becomes an opportunity for rebirth and a physical place for a story to the citizens on the occasion of the Christmas holidays.

The presentation ceremony of the collaboration that Eni, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT) and the Archdiocese of Spoleto and Norcia are starting to contribute to the reconstruction of the Basilica of San Benedetto di Norcia was held today. , severely damaged by the recent earthquake that hit Umbria in 2016.

The ceremony was held in the presence of the President of Eni, Lucia Calvosa, the Mayor of Norcia, Nicola Alemanno, the Archbishop of Spoleto and Norcia, Monsignore Renato Boccardo, the representative of MiBACT, Marica Mercalli (Director General for the security cultural); by the Special Superintendent for the areas affected by the earthquake, Paolo Iannelli, by the Extraordinary Commissioner for the 2016 Earthquake Reconstruction, Giovanni Legnini, and the President Donatella Tesei for the Umbria Region video-connected.

The Basilica, symbol of the city, has almost completely collapsed, preserving only the main facade and the apse. In the past, the Basilica of San Benedetto was marked by natural events; the 1703 earthquake destroyed the upper part of the bell tower, which was later rebuilt in a more modest size. Following the earthquake of 1859, the facade underwent a restoration intervention in the upper part. The 1997 earthquake damaged the supporting structure which was restored and reopened on the occasion of the 2000 Jubilee.

Eni will make available its skills in the use of advanced technologies, as well as the management skills gained in the international competitive context in highly complex scenarios to provide technical support throughout the duration of the project. Eni will also be directly involved in the execution of some reconstruction lots. The conservation, safety and seismic consolidation of the Basilica are among the main objectives of the project, in compliance with the needs of protecting the historical, artistic and cultural values of the monument.

Furthermore, with the aim of starting immediately the dialogue and updating of the population on the progress of the works, and being close to the community of Norcia for the upcoming Christmas holidays, Eni wanted to create, through a suggestive technique such as that of video mapping, an initiative to tell the place in its absence: starting from December 22, the area in front of the facade of the Basilica will in fact become a physical place and a symbol of rebirth of a story to the citizens.

The show will consist of a video made up of virtual reconstructions, computer graphics animations amplified and enriched by plays of light, which will enhance the facade of the Basilica and the entire square, as well as specially composed music. The video story, like a sort of magic, will make the viewer enter a medieval construction site, where he will be able to see the Basilica as it was in the past, both externally and internally. The screenings will be organized in full compliance with the rules relating to health safety and will begin at sunset until 22 pm, for a total of 5 hours a day of show starting today and tomorrow and then resuming on December 28th to 30th. .

Eni has always pursued its commitment, with concrete and tangible actions in favor of local communities and territories, putting its skills and know-how at the service of the country's artistic and cultural heritage.
