Eni and the Government of Mozambique strengthen cooperation for sustainable development and decarbonisation

Mozambique's Minister of Mineral Resources Ernesto Max Tonela and Eni's Chief Executive Officer Claudio Descalzi signed a Memorandum of Understanding today in Maputo to define projects on sustainable development and decarbonisation. The signing took place in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi.

The protocol foresees the cooperation between ENI and the Government of Mozambique in defining joint initiatives to support the Country's Social and Economic Development Agenda. These initiatives will be defined on the basis of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, and the nationally determined Contributions (Nationally Determined Contributions, NDC), signed by each country under the Paris Agreement to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Areas of cooperation include emission reduction, support for conservation and sustainable management of forests and preservation of carbon stocks, as part of REDD + initiatives. The first objective concerns the protection of 1 million hectares of forests, which will allow to offset the future production of CO2 of Eni projects in the country. Other areas of cooperation are related to energy access (SDG 7), industry development, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), sustainable forest management (SDG 15), the fight against climate change and against environmental impacts (SDG 13), access to education and training (SDG 4, 8), economic diversification (SDG 8), access to water (SDG 6) and access to health (SDG 3).

These agreements extend the scope of Eni's activities in Mozambique and strengthen its presence in the country.

Eni is present in Mozambique by the 2006, following the acquisition of a stake in the 4 area oil permit, in the Rovuma basin, in the northern area of the country, where supergiant natural gas resources were discovered in the fields from the 2011 to the 2014 of Coral, Mamba Complex and Agulha, estimated at 2.400 billion cubic meters of gas in place.
