Erdogan ups the ante: "No to Sweden and Finland in NATO". Stoltenberg ready to mediate

(By Massimiliano D'Elia) The Swedish premier Magdalena Andersson has announced that the country will ask to join NATO at the same time that Finland will formalize the acts of accession, probably next Sunday.

Andersson specified that it is "a historic change in our security policy, we enter a new era: the government has decided to inform the Atlantic Pact that our country wants to be accepted as its member".

Europe, Sweden and its people remarked Andersson "Now they live in a new and dangerous reality".

The internal turning point was the social democratic party which last Sunday in Parliament gave the green light to the request for membership of the Alliance. The imprint of the Stockholm left party can be seen in the premier's statements: "if accepted in the Atlantic Pact, Sweden will not accept nuclear weapons or Alliance military bases on its territory, claiming for itself the same model as Norway ". This position is, among other things, in line with Putin's fear: not to have Sweden and Finland militarized by NATO with new bases and above all new and dangerous missile positions.

Andersson called for a fast joining process which, as a well-known necessity, is approved by all member countries. In this regard, the NATO Secretary General Jean Stoltenberg, on the occasion of the Finnish proposal, had already spoken of very fast decision-making processes.

The fear of Stockholm is due to the probable escalation of the war that could induce Putin to widen the conflict in the Scandinavian countries, to date not yet placed under the protective umbrella of NATO, and not able to enjoy the mutual defensive participation established by theArticle 5 of the Pact.

Stockholm has meanwhile already garnered support in the event of a Russian attack by the US, UK and Germany. Support without any legal guarantee of military aid.

Denmark, Norway and Iceland also offered their help in a joint statement: "If Sweden or Finland were to be victims of aggression on their territory before becoming NATO members, we would assist them with all necessary means.".

Only a NATO country could blow the “bank”. Turkey has gone sideways accusing the two Nordic countries of hosting Kurdish organizations, such as the PKK and the Ypg which Ankara considers terrorist organizations.

However, at the top of NATO foreign ministers, the Turkish foreign minister Cavusoglu he hinted that Finland and Sweden will not be prevented from joining NATO. The president took care of the cards again yesterday Erdogan that has "screamed "his dry NO to the request for NATO membership of the Scandinavian countries, defining Sweden and Finland as "incubators of terrorism".

Jean Stoltenberg could run to resolve the impasse, ready to mediate between Turkey's historical demands, including the arms embargo, and the new need to have Finland and Sweden on the northern side of the Alliance, thus constituting in the Baltic Sea, as said Dr. Giuseppe Paccione, the sea of NATO.
