Libyan Coast Guard: Italian patrol boats are old and unsuitable for rescues

The Lybian Address Journal, a newspaper close to General Haftar reports that the spokesman for the Libyan coast guard based in Tripoli, Ayoub Qassem, told the media on Friday that Italy has supplied old patrol boats not suitable for rescue.

He also accused international non-governmental organizations of trying to reap huge profits through illegal flights to and from Libya.

Qassem revealed that the number of migrant victims reaches 120.000 per year, due to smugglers' use of old boats crowded with immigrants. He also said there are many who have drowned in the sea.

Qassem asked Europe to "give billions every year" so that "the Coast Guard performs its role correctly against the migratory waves from Africa". He added that Libya is not defending Europe, but defending its sovereignty.
