Giuseppe Conte "superstar", Salvini and Di Maio want him as the only broker with Brussels

Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio have removed the scepter of mediator from the Minister of Economy and Finance Giovanni Tria to entrust it to the skilled Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who apparently manages to be very incisive across borders. In this regard, the two vice premieres issued a joint note to formalize the new line: "Giuseppe Conte is illustrating to Europe the potential of the broad reform agenda that will bring the country back to growth, avoiding the risk of a third recession and opening to Italy a better future prospect. Our measures restart employment and productivity, reaching out to those who have remained behind in these years of crisis, giving breath to consumption and looking at investments as a fundamental springboard for long-term growth ”. Later, Il Messaggero writes, sources from Palazzo Chigi stressed that the press release drawn up by four hands served, in fact, to reaffirm the full confidence in the mediation work that Prime Minister Conte is carrying out at all levels. Between today and tomorrow Giuseppe Conte will have to meet President of the European Commission Juncker and Commissioner Moscovici.

The crucial point is to bring the deficit to 2 per cent without having to touch income, the Citizenship pension and Quota 100. In this regard, the government could present a second tranche of proposals but, at least as regards pensions, it is likely that in the end it is decided to postpone the whole operation to the decisions of the Senate.

In the meantime, the work of the commission in the Chamber continues - 500 proposals for changes presented by the groups - with the aim of getting to dismiss the provision tomorrow and allow it to arrive in the Chamber on Wednesday. Speed is essential to be able to give Giuseppe Conte further elements of dissuasion in the negotiation with Brussels.

The Eurogroup today brings together the 19 economic ministers of the countries participating in the euro to discuss the Italian maneuver, confirming the line of the Commission.

The last meeting of the Commission for 19 will take place on December 2018, but the EU summit on December 13 and 14 is essential as Prime Minister Conte will meet Juncker (they had already met at the G20 in Buenos Aires). The Eurogroup also received Ecofin's seal, last Thursday, which confirmed "in toto" the considerations of the EU Commission on the Italian maneuver, endorsing the infringement procedure for excessive deficit. The Ecofin (made up of the economics and finance ministers of the member countries) not only confirmed the Commission's statements on the too wide deviation of the Italian accounts, but added a harsh criticism of the pension reform, because it alone puts the accounts at risk of sustainability in the medium to long term. And it goes against all the reforms made so far, which instead have secured public finances. The idea of Brussels is to wait for the European summit of 13-14 December to also have the political support of all countries. At that point, the procedure could start on the 19th with the request for correction of the accounts within six months, and a calendar of subsequent corrections until the disputed deviation is returned.
