Eye health: indoor pollution also plays its part

Massive use of devices and pollution - even "indoor" - can cause disturbances to our eyes

Professor Alessandro Zanasi of the Sanpellegrino Observatory explains why water can help keep them healthy.

Working in close synergy with the brain, our eyes allow us to perceive the surrounding environment with a wealth of detail and minuteness. It is mainly through these precious organs that we are able to perceive most of the information, but despite this in everyday life we often neglect them without realizing that their health is also determined by our lifestyle.

Drinking an adequate amount of water every day - for example - is one of the behaviors that can help us keep them healthy and prevent ailments and annoyances, even caused by simple daily actions, such as staring at the screen of PCs, tablets and smartphones for an extended period. .

Our eyes, besides being stressed by the massive use of devices, are constantly exposed to threats that come from irritating environmental substances, dust and foreign bodies that are not only present in the smog present in the cities but also in closed environments. In our homes, in fact, there are residues of cigarette smoke, burning of wood or the use of stoves, powders, paints, household products but also biological pollutants such as bacteria, viruses, pollen, mites, allergens, molds that they are the cause of the so-called indoor pollution: a hazard not visible and little considered but which can affect the health of the ocular system, especially if you are not careful to keep them well hydrated. As regards the closed environments, among the good rules to follow, there is the air exchange every 4-6 hours and follow the hygiene rules as much as possible (periodically washing curtains and upholstery, constantly eliminating dust, etc.) but for our eyes what can we do?

Eyes and benefits of proper hydration

Drinking the right amount of water every day is one of the good habits to keep your eyes healthy; on the contrary, drinking little, leads to a reduction in the production of tears, an element that is instead essential for the protection and hydration of the eye surface: every time you blink your eyelashes thanks to tears, a sort of film is formed that unwinds very important functions - such as defense against bacterial infections - and provides nutrients to the eye, such as oxygen and lipids and lubricates the cornea. “This fundamental part of the eye together with the vitreous body are made up of over 90% water, so it would be really impossible to imagine having a healthy and perfectly efficient visual apparatus without a correct supply of water. - explains Dr. Alessandro Zanasi, expert of the Sanpellegrino Observatory and member of the International Stockholm Water Foundation - This is why drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day without waiting for the stimulus of thirst, but rather anticipating it, is good for our body in general but in in particular, it can represent a real preventive action for the health of the visual apparatus ".

Taking the right amount of water daily helps to thin the blood [1], favoring circulation and avoiding the formation of annoying "red spots" in the eye.

Proper hydration is allied not only with health but also with the beauty of the look, for example by contrasting the bags under the eyes that are caused by a stagnation of liquids. Drinking water promotes diuresis and helps eliminate excess fluid by limiting this annoying blemish.
