FCA chooses the technologies of HARMAN (Samsung) and Google for the new global "ecosystem" for connected vehicles

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) (NYSE: FCAU / MTA: FCA) announced that it will use the technologies of HARMAN (Samsung) and Google to offer a new "ecosystem" that will improve the online capabilities of FCA vehicles worldwide. Overboard, the system will quickly and safely manage internal and external vehicle data, using an architecture based on the HARMAN Ignite cloud platform. This will determine an improved user experience that will provide assistance to the owner, for example anticipating maintenance needs, identifying refueling and recharging stations, offering traffic alerts and notifications on restaurant offers, as well as ensuring real-time customer support with simple push of a button. In addition, vehicles will be able to receive over-the-air (OTA) software updates, allowing users to take advantage of the latest features and software applications.

The global platform has an 4G network and supports the transition to 5G, is approved for all regions and is compatible with any service provider in the world. Furthermore, the off-board system is able to interact with the smart city infrastructures of the future and with home automation devices via Samsung's "SmartThings" platform. In addition to vehicle owners, dealers, fleet operators and service providers will also benefit from the features offered by the new cloud connectivity. On board, the system exploits Android technology to offer a powerful, stable and intuitive environment, with new contents thanks to OTA updates, rapid interaction and perfect wireless integration with the customer's devices. This safe and reliable system is a source of continuous innovation and is updated via an integrated cellular network, giving access to new functions in autonomous driving, electrification and services.

This connected ecosystem will offer an ideal technical environment for FCA electric vehicles, thanks to applications such as remote battery management, the intelligent EV navigator and vehicle-to-power network services. The platform, in addition, will support the range of FCA mobility services, including mileage rate options, insurance policies based on actual vehicle use, short, medium and long term car rentals and car sharing solutions peer-to-peer as the U-Go system, recently launched in Europe by Leasys. The main components of the system will begin to be introduced gradually throughout the world in the second half of the 2019. All new FCA vehicles will be connected starting from the 2022. "By choosing Samsung and Google, the industry leaders, we are using our capital efficiently and responsibly to offer technologically advanced solutions to our customers around the world," said Harald Wester, FCA Chief Technical Officer. "In collaboration with HARMAN - Samsung and Google, we have developed a flexible, intuitive and connected 'ecosystem', which is not limited to using current technologies, but is also designed to integrate future innovations."

“HARMAN Ignite and our award-winning OTA system are key factors in the future of connected cars; We are excited about this collaboration with FCA to realize their global ecosystem. With these new technologies, HARMAN and Samsung offer a revolutionary level of personalized services from which OEMs like FCA, customers and companies in the growing car sharing sector will benefit in ways never seen before, ”commented Dinesh Paliwal, president and CEO by HARMAN. "The current vehicle usage experience must be designed to ensure perfect connectivity and enjoyment of digital content, as well as to provide a familiar experience in the fast-paced customer life," said Patrick Brady, vice president of engineering at Google . "We are excited that FCA uses Android for its infotainment system and offers its drivers a rich and reliable environment, fertile ground for app development and content."
