The Golden Flower of China in mourning

Hong Kong opposition exponents dressed in black veils the golden orchid-shaped statue, called the “Golden Bauhinia”, donated to the city by Beijing in 1997 to celebrate the return to Chinese sovereignty. The black-clad statue - photo posted on Twitter - wants to denounce the hard line of the Chinese authoritarian regime over the past twenty years. Members of the opposition groups Demosisto and League of Social Democrats, including student leader Joshua Wong, believe that the Chinese government has failed to honor the promises of the Sino-British declaration, depriving the people of Hong Kong of civil and political rights to democracy and free elections. The agreements with London, inspired by the “one country two systems” principle, guarantee a series of civil rights to the citizens of the former colony and a large degree of political and economic autonomy. In 2014, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of the former British colony in the famous "umbrella protest" to express dissent over Beijing's decision to impose a China check on election candidates. The golden statue, six meters high, placed in front of the "Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Center”Is now considered one of the city's tourist attractions.
